St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The varsity football team continues to sit in the No. 2 AJC poll spot, and girls' basketball begins the season ranked No. 4 in AAA in another poll.

Last week saw winter sports start action as football continued its march in the Georgia High School Association AAA state playoffs. The Golden Lion football squad continues to sit in the No. 2 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings and No. 3 in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) poll.  Girls’ basketball begins the season in the initial GACA poll in the No. 4 position in AAA.

The Golden Lion football team advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs for the second time in three years with a 31-6 win over Henry County. Senior quarterback Trey White opened the scoring for (12-0) with a 55-yard score. Ryan Braswell led the Golden Lions with 153 yards and three TDs on 23 carries. Michael Healy recorded 12 tackles with a sack while Joseph Crochet added 10 and Danny Sutherland had a sack as well. Senior cornerback Aaron Avant intercepted two passes as the Golden Lion defense held the high-powered Warhawk offense to just 188 total yards. St. Pius will host Cairo on Friday night at 7:30pm at George B. Maloof Stadium in the quarterfinals.

The girls’ basketball team travelled to Houston to take on St. Pius X of Houston and John Paul II from Corpus Christi in the SPX Shootout Classic over the weekend. The ladies used 15 points from Elizabeth Elliott and 13 from Asia Durr to knock off the host Panthers, 47-41, in the opening game Friday night.  Saturday afternoon, Anna O’Donnell led the Golden Lions with 15 points and Mackenzie Garrison chipped in 13 to help the Golden Lions to a 69-20 win over John Paul II. The Golden Lions (2-0) will be back in action Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Westminster at 6pm, and the boys’ open the season at Westminster the same evening at 7:30pm.

Boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving scored a victory over rival Blessed Trinity Thursday night. The boys’ defeated the Titans 172-87 while the girls’ won 181-103. The Golden Lions will hit the pool again on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at at 5pm.

Wrestling will begin its season at a team meet at Stockbridge High School, Dec. 2-3.
