St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap
The Golden Lions' girls' basketball team bumped up to No. 3 in the AJC's poll, and boys' basketball dropped both contests over the weekend to Druid Hills and Washington.
Each St. Pius winter program was in action last week as wrestling took part in two matches, swimming and diving participated in one meet and both basketball teams played two games. This week will see the final home wrestling match as well as the beginning of a five game home stand for the basketball squads. Girls’ basketball continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll and moved up a rung to No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.
The Golden Lion girls’ basketball team swept both region games last week. Emma Ucinski and Asia Durr tallied 11 points while Sydni Payne chipped in 10 as St. Pius (15-3, 7-0 Region 5A-AAA) defeated Druid Hills, 58-17. Anna O’Donnell collected six rebounds in the win. In a 60-9 victory over Washington, Durr scored 12 points, and O’Donnell had 10. Katani Ostine-Franklin and Dylan Krause each grabbed four boards. The Golden Lions will play three games this week, all at home, as they take on Woodward today and North Springs on Friday before stepping out of the region for the final time against Chestatee. All games tip at 6pm.
The boys’ basketball squad dropped both region contests last week. The Golden Lions (7-10, 2-5) fell to Druid Hills, 55-45. Will Maguire dropped in 11 points, while Nick Harris had eight rebounds. On Friday, Washington knocked off St. Pius, 51-33. Will Horton led the Golden Lions with nine points and Kevin Lewis grabbed six caroms. The start of a five-game home stand begins this week with three games. All games tip at 7:30pm as Woodward, North Springs and Chestatee visit the Golden Lions. Games are today, Friday and Saturday.
Wrestling participated in the Clinch Gear Southeastern Prep Slam at Holy Innocents’ over the weekend. Senior Robbie Martin finished fourth in his weight class in an event that counted 44 teams from 11 states as participants. The Golden Lions will host a multiple team meet on Wednesday before traveling this weekend to a tournament at Miller Grove.

Boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving defeated Dunwoody last week, 257-111. The teams will travel to Chamblee today before participating on Saturday in the Metro Atlanta and Karen Blackmon Invitationals. The state championships are Feb. 11-12.
