St. Pius X Athlete Named MVP of U16 FIBA Americas Cup
After a stellar performance in international competition, rising junior Asia Durr took the award in Mexico.

St. Pius X Catholic High School rising junior Asia Durr was named the Most Valuable Player at the FIBA Americas Cup Tournament on Sunday as the United States U16 Women’s Basketball Team captured the gold medal by defeating Canada 82-48 in Cancun, Mexico. It was the third straight gold medal earned by the USA U16 team in as many tries in the tournament, running its record to 15-0 all-time in the event.
Leading 32-31 with just more than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, Durr, of Douglasville, embarked on a personal 12-0 run to spark the USA team on a 22-0 run. She finished the game with three USA U16 single-game records, including 26 points, eight steals and 22 field goals attempted, and she tied the high for field goals made with nine. Durr averaged 18 points per game over the five-game tournament.
Durr told usabasketball.com after being selected the tournament MVP: “I was shocked. The whole team played great throughout this tournament, and for them to call my name, it means a lot.”
Durr was the Georgia Sportswriters Association, Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA girls’ basketball state player of the year. She was also Region 6-AAA player of the year. Durr led the Golden Lions to the Region 6-AAA championship, AAA state championship and a 30-3 record.
