St. Pius X Wins State Volleyball Title

Cross-country teams compete in state meets this weekend.

As the calendar moves to November, St. Pius X has captured one state championship and will look to add two more this upcoming weekend. Volleyball took the AAA state crown on Saturday, while both top-ranked cross country squads will race at the state meet this weekend in Carrollton. Football will end the regular season at home.

Volleyball won its first-ever state championship with a four-game win over Area 3-AAA rival, Blessed Trinity. Leah Hardeman led the Golden Lions (48-7) with 35 kills in the match. Ryan Boykin had 35 digs, while Katrina Connolly added 37 assists. St. Pius X advanced to the title game for the third consecutive year with a 3-1 win over Buford on Wednesday.

Football dropped its second consecutive game for the first time since the 2008 season, losing to Blessed Trinity 21-20. St. Pius X (6-3, 3-2) had touchdowns from Branden Mitchell, Jack Pelt and Dalton Wilson. Forrest Whitlark recorded six-and-a-half tackles and Daniel Crochet added six to lead the defense. The Golden Lions host Decatur at 7:30 p.m. this Friday on Senior Night.

Boys’ cross country raced to the Region 6-AAA crown last week at Clinton Farms. Austin Sprague took individual honors with a school record 15:01 time.  Joey Ferrugia finished in second place and Stephen Martinez, Nik Calia and Andrew Anastasiades all finished in the top 10 for the Golden Lions. The harriers travel to Carrollton for the state meet on Saturday.

Girls’ cross country also won the Region 6-AAA meet at Clinton Farms.  Margaret Crawford won the individual title with a school record time of 18:47.  Rebecca Entrekin finished third in the race.  The ladies will head to Carrollton on Saturday for the state meet.

Competition cheerleading will head to Roswell High School for the region meet on Saturday.
