Sorry Metro Atlanta -- It's Going To Stay This Cold

National Weather Service forecasts freezing temperatures for the next three nights in the Atlanta area.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA -- The freezing cold that wiped away north Georgia’s unseasonably warm weather overnight is here to stay, at least for a few days.

Lows dipping into the 20s will be with us for the next three nights, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

It’ll warm up some later in the week. But, even then, highs will be in the lower 50s, with lows in the mid-30s.

The cold snap, which -- let’s be honest -- is the kind of weather we should have been experiencing in January -- is the coolest it’s been in the Weather Service’s Atlanta region since February 20 of last year.

Highs Monday are expected to be in the mid-40s, with lows dropping into the upper-20s again Monday night. That’s almost exactly the same forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, except lows Tuesday night will be down in the mid-20s.

But here’s some good news for people with terms like “Snowpocalypse” and “Snow Jam” bouncing around in their heads: no precipitation is expected, meaning the cold snap is unlikely to bring with it the snow and ice that can snarl traffic, and just about everything else, in metro Atlanta.

By Thursday, highs should be creeping back into the lower 50s, with lows in the upper 30s, the Weather Service says.

Friday and Saturday will bring a chance of rain to much of the area, but highs should stay in the 50s and lows in the mid-to-upper 30s, minimizing the chances of the precipitation freezing.

Residents are reminded to bring in pets and plants, leave faucets dripping and take other precautionary measures during the cold snap.
