New Crabapple Middle School Meeting On Oct. 29

Fulton County Schools will now proceed with building a replacement middle school on a site along Woodstock Road.

ROSWELL, GA — The Fulton County School System capital planning team will host a community update on the timeline and design of the new Crabapple Middle School. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the school's cafeteria.

Original plans called for the school to be reconstructed on its current site at 10700 Crabapple Road in Roswell. However, FCS notes "construction challenges" were identified that would substantially increase the cost of the project. Some of those problems include sitework complications and difficulties associated with a three-year phasing plan that would keep students and staff on the site while the new school was built, the system said.

Those increased costs led FCS to explore other options and find a new site less on Woodstock Road, which is less than two miles from the current middle school. FCS spokesperson Cierra Boyd said the decision to move forward with buying the property was made at the Fulton school board's Oct. 9 work session. The price tag is $4.1 million, and the location will be near the intersection of Woodstock Road and Jones Road in Roswell, with the site entrance on Woodstock.

This location eliminates the disruption that could occur during phasing and building while students and staff are on site, FCS said. The new school is still to projected to open on its original 2021-22 school year timeline.

The replacement Crabapple Middle School is part of the school system’s Capital Plan 2022, which is funded by the one-penny Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Approved by Fulton County voters in 2016, SPLOST funds new school construction, additions and renovations, technology innovations, transportation upgrades and safety improvements over a five-year period.
