Roswell DAR Chapter Grants Scholarship to North Fulton Student

The $1,000 scholarship, in honor of Marcheta Knight Weitz, was given to Ryan Matthew Prince this year.

Each year the Martha Stewart Bulloch Chapter, Daughter’s of the American Revolution (DAR) recognizes an outstanding college-bound North Fulton high school senior through a scholarship established in memory of past DAR Regent Marcheta Knight Weitz. This year, the honor goes to Northview senior Ryan Matthew Prince.

Prince carries a GPA of 102.5, attained a perfect score on his ACT test, and ranks sixth out of 491 graduating seniors at Northview. He is extremely active in athletics as well as in community projects, plays varsity baseball, coaches youth baseball and tutors his peers in mathematics and science.

Prince received the $1,000 DAR scholarship for being an individual that exemplifies the characteristics of excellent academics, unquestioned patriotism, good citizenship and service to his or her community and family.

Prior to her death in 2002 from pancreatic cancer, Weitz was planning to establish an annual scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior at a North Fulton high school on a rotating basis. The scholarship was established and first awarded in 2003 to a senior at . There have been seven North Fulton high schools that have had a scholarship recipient since its inception and an eighth school will be added next year in 2013.

It was Weitz' desire for the chapter to be active in education, not only through donations to the DAR sponsored schools, but also for the young people in the local community. This is the reason for the name of this scholarship. It was Weitz’ dream and is her legacy.

DAR members raise the funds for the scholarship every year during the March Chapter meeting auction and luncheon. This year the scholarship committee included Liz Bauer, Cora Cramer and Donna Owens.

Who was Marcheta Knight Weitz?

Marcheta Weitz was a native of Mississippi. She married Jack Weitz and moved to Roswell where they raised five children. “Keet,” as she was affectionately called by family and friends restored the 1890’s farmhouse located at the corner of Rucker Road and Harris Road. She worked as a real estate broker and was active in local activities, such as, serving as a docent at Bulloch Hall.

Keet joined the Martha Stewart Bulloch Chapter of the NSDAR in 1997 and became an active member, attending not only chapter meetings, but also state meetings. Keet served as Membership Chairman and re-vamped the committee. She was the first to order and offer the magnetized name tags used today.

Keet was elected Chapter Regent in 2000 and served until 2002. During her administration she:

  • urged the use of the newly established web page
  • gained 26 new members and 6 members by transfer
  • marked the grave of town founder, Roswell King in 2001 and
  • established the Martha Stewart Bulloch Find at the Tamassee DAR School to be used for special needs required by residents of the Indiana All-States College at the school

These are but a few of the chapter accomplishments under Keet’s capable leadership.

When Rosemary Hunter, State Regent, was on the slate for the national office of Vice-President General, Keet was so excited that members of her chapter could go to Continental Congress and support Rosemary’s candidacy.  However on that trip, Keet was taken ill and was hospitalized where the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was made. Although doctors wanted to operate immediately, Keet wanted to return to Roswell for the operation where she would have the support of family and DAR friends.  But before leaving Washington, Keet checked out of the hospital and went to Continental Hall and cast her vote for her dear friend, Rosemary.

Georgia-State Regent elect, Rose Bell had appointed Keet as the State Conference Chairman for the 2003 State Conference.  Keet was not able to fulfill this appointment. She died on September 2, 2002.
