2 Monkeys On The Loose Captured By Georgia Deputies

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA — Two pet monkeys on the loose for more than a week near Savannah have been found safe and returned to the owners.

"The search is over, the missing monkeys are home," the Effingham County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a Facebook post. "Thank you for all of the help, Effingham."

According to deputies, on May 22, the sheriff's office received an odd yet actual call in reference to several Patas monkeys who managed to escape from their owners' home in Effingham.

"It sounded like a scene from Jumanji but it was not," the sheriff's office said at the time.

Deputies worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to trap them.

Additional details on the monkeys’ escape and capture weren’t immediately available.

The sheriff's office said more information will be available once DNR has completed its investigation.

Deputies said, however, that the monkeys are legally owned.

Effingham County is about 50 minutes from Savannah.

Patas monkeys are the world’s fastest primates. They can live more than 20 years under human care and can weigh up to 30 pounds, according to The Animal Facts.
