Here are the top three stories in Savannah today:
- Lawyers for the family of a man who took his own life while in police custody are demanding $12 million from the City of Savannah. William Harvey, 60, died in April 2021 after he was left alone inside the police interview room. Police claim Harvey had been drinking and tested positive for cocaine at the time of his arrest. - During the weekly press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Van Johnson shared that multiple law enforcement agencies will be patrolling the streets ahead of St. Patrick's Day this weekend. Due to the anticipated influx of residents and tourists, the mayor says hundreds of officers from several agencies and departments are coming in from across the state to ensure that the public is kept safe during all of the celebratory festivities. - The Girl Scouts of the USA is celebrating its history this March with National Girl Scout Week. On Mar. 12, the organization turned 111 years old, commemorating the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the Girl Scout's first 18 girl members here in Savannah, Georgia. Plant Riverside District's Shamrocks and Shenanigans Celebration is happening now through Sunday, Mar. 19, and features various celebratory activities, light bites, and good music. - Film Savannah is looking to cast extras and stand-ins for a new Freevee comedy series that's set to begin filming on Monday, Mar. 27. The series is being produced by Norman Lear and stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace. People of all ages and ethnicities are encouraged to come out as compensation will be available, and all minors are required to obtain a GDOL Minors in Entertainment permit to participate. - The Savannah Jewish Educational Alliance shared that construction workers have officially laid down the flooring of its new in-ground pool coming in the summer of 2023. Next week, workers will be pouring the walls to leave plenty of time for the concrete to cure while they begin installing piping, pumps, and drains.
