Here are the top four stories today in Savannah:

  1. Along with cooler weather, it looks like fall will be bringing lower gas prices to the residents of Georgia. The average price throughout the state currently stands at $3.11, down a full seven cents since last week. Unfortunately, Savannah drivers have the most expensive gas prices in the state at $3.22 for a gallon of gas. That's significantly lower than the national average of $3.71. (Savannah CEO)
  2. The entire gulf is bracing for Hurricane Ian to make landfall and experts are trying to anticipate how severe the damage could be. While concerns are still high, officials are cautiously optimistic that aside from heavy rain and some flooding, there will be no major damage. Meteorologists estimate that the amount of rain will not exceed seven inches, and will probably average closer to three or five inches. Despite these predictions, officials are reminding Savannah citizens that Hurricane Ian is currently a category 3 storm and should be treated with extreme caution. (Savannah Morning News)
  3. This Saturday, gardeners of all experience levels are set to attend The Savannah Plant Swap. The popular annual event gives gardeners a rare opportunity to gather together and share stories, tips, and gardening gossip. Even better, every gardener is invited and encouraged to bring plants to trade with others. It's a wonderful way to add some variety to your current greenhouse or thin out your flowerbeds a bit. Money is not allowed, so bring your greens but leave your wallet at home. (Savannah Morning News)
  4. With Hurricane Ian on the horizon, agricultural experts are concerned about how the storm could negatively impact crops throughout the region. Cotton and peanuts are grown widely throughout the area - and heavy rainfall could prove disastrous. Tons of cotton fiber per acre could be washed away, and peanut crops could get destroyed by the influx of water. Farmers throughout the county and state are working to batten down the hatches in an effort to save as much of the crops as possible before the storm hits. (WTOC)
