Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- Drivers speeding through school zones in the City of Savannah have contributed over $500,000 in revenue since November. The cameras installed at 12 schools have caught nearly 36,000 offenders, with speeding dropping by 82 percent in these zones. The ticket revenue is divided, with 60 percent going to the Savannah Police Department, 35 percent to the camera company, and five percent to the board of education. However, some residents believe a higher percentage should support the school directly. (WSAV)
- The City of Savannah held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the long-awaited plan for the redevelopment of the Coastal Empire Fairgrounds. The project, which has been in progress since 2014, involves the phased construction of affordable housing units for seniors on the 66-acre site. City officials assured residents of transparency and addressed concerns regarding the developer's background, emphasizing their commitment to a trustworthy and community-supported development. - In a significant development, Chatham County and the Port of Savannah have secured $1.87 million in funding to optimize train operations by eliminating railroad tracks at 11 different sites. This eagerly anticipated change has been welcomed by residents and local leaders who anticipate an improved quality of life across various neighborhoods in the county. The successful acquisition of federal funding for railroad crossings on the CSX and Norfolk Southern lines was made possible through the efforts of Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, as well as Congressman Buddy Carter.
