Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. Chatham Emergency Management Agency reports that Hurricane Ian "moved past us." The county was under a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch into the weekend; however, the storm essentially skipped Savannah and landed in South Carolina. While the Salvation Army and Union Mission shelters remained open for residents, the temporary shelter at Compassion Christian Church has closed. (Subscription: Savannah Morning News)
  2. The Drive Savannah, a local Savannah nonprofit, is working to expand its services. The nonprofit helps feed individuals experiencing homelessness in Savannah. Currently, the organization's day center out of Christ Church Anglican serves over 200 people when it is open; however, it is only able to operate one day each week due to expenses. Staff with The Drive Savannah hope the center can remain open six days a week in the near future. (WTOC)
  3. According to a Georgia House study committee, Savannah is facing an affordable housing shortage. According to MarketNsight, the city is short by about 9,300 units. The problem seems to be statewide. The main issue is reportedly long-standing zoning rules that do not reflect state and national demographic shifts. (Gwinnett Daily Post)
