Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. According to Savannah Police, Charles Porter, 52, of Savannah, was arrested after shooting a woman in a domestic dispute at 11:30 p.m. on May 29. When officers arrived at a home in the 5500 block of Alma Street, they located a 29-year-old woman with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital for treatment. Porter was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a handgun during the commission of a crime. According to police, the investigation is still ongoing. (WSAV-TV)
  2. Deep Center, a Savannah non-profit, has received a $150,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the ninth year in a row. The grant will help support Deep Center’s cultural engagement, which includes a free, year-round creative writing literacy program for students and educators and a multidisciplinary arts engagement and asset mapping project for youth and adults. According to NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, "the National Endowment for the Arts is pleased to support a wide range of projects, including Deep Center, demonstrating the many ways the arts enrich our lives and contribute to healthy and thriving communities."   3. A child riding a bicycle was injured by a car around 6:00 p.m. Monday on DeLesseps Avenue and Guatemala Street, according to Savannah police. Officers discovered the 11-year-old child with non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. According to authorities, the boy ran a stop sign while riding a motorized bicycle and was hit by an oncoming car. (WJCL News Savannah)

  • Public Service Announcement: According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), a new turbine bridge ramp connecting I-95 southbound to I-16 eastbound will open overnight Friday. (WSAV)
  • Starting the first week in June, the YMCA of the Coastal Empire will offer open-water swimming classes for those ages six months and older. Classes are available at the YMCA branches in Islands, Habersham, West Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Golden Isles. The Coastal Safety Around Water course is also available at all summer camps, including Tybee Island, Richmond Hill, McIntosh, and Statesboro. (Bryan County News)
  • Tomorrow, Jun. 1, Live Oak Public Libraries will be hosting a Nintendo Night at Oglethorpe Mall Library for those ages 12-17. The event will take place from 3:30-4:30 p.m. (Live Oak Public Libraries)
