Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- The Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah has tentatively adopted a 2023 millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 10.00 percent. According to Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, the proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $157.09 (annually), and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $160.30. There will be several public hearings over the next couple of weeks to discuss the increase and city officials are encouraging residents to share any concerns. (WTOC)
- The Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport announced they will be teaming up with an innovative personal transportation company to help improve mobility options for a variety of passengers. This new service was made possible by WHILL as their Model C2 power chairs allow passengers to navigate the terminals themselves and visit restaurants, shops, and restrooms before boarding their flight. Formerly, passengers with mobility limitations were required to be pushed around by airport staff in a wheelchair, therefore leaving these individuals with no independence. (AllOnGeorgia.com)
- According to a recent announcement, Chatham County is confirmed to receive a more than $1.8 million grant to help improve railroad crossings. This funding will go directly toward the planning, development, and relocation of various tracks in Savannah, Port Wentworth, and Garden City. Overall, the goal of this project is to make rail lines more accessible for local riders to navigate and improve entry to the ports. (WTOC)
