Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. Reports confirmed that the remains found in January along the Savannah River belong to a trans woman from North Carolina, according to the Chatham County Police Department on Tuesday. The victim, KC Lee Johnson, was killed by 26-year-old William Haven Hicks, who she met online. Hicks has since been charged and taken back to South Carolina. (WSAV-TV)
  2. Mary’s Place of the Coastal Empire is putting on a number of events in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Formerly known as the Rape Crisis Center, the organization provides resources for victims of sexual assault. The first event is the Gala and Lip Synch Competition this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Victory North, which will feature a drag performance, a group lip-synching competition, and a crowd favorite vote. Next week on Apr. 13, you can make your way over to Tybee Island for their TEAL H.E.A.L Walk, which invites men to walk in heels as allies in this fight against sexual violence, and also reminds them that Mary's Place serves them as well. Registration and more information is available on their website. (WTOC)
  3. The workshop, “Honoring the Earth: Upcycling with Purpose,” will be hosted at the Savannah African Art Museum on Apr. 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will celebrate Earth Day, with participants using recycled plastic bags to make plastic bed-roll mats for the homeless. The workshop aims to bring the community together to support both Savannah's most vulnerable population and promote protecting the environment. You can register here. (Savannah Business Journal)
