- Savannah native and bassist Joseph Conyers is back home to play at the Savannah Music Festival. With a career that spans the Curtis Institute of Music, Grand Rapids Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, he credits much of his success to his mother and teachers at Savannah Country Day School for encouraging him. He hopes that he is able to return the same type of mentorship to his community. (WTOC)
- Applications are open for the renaming of Calhoun Square. The first application is already in and suggests naming the square after Liberty County native Susie King Taylor who was an education advocate and the first African American nurse during the civil war. If selected, this square would become the first in the area named after a woman. The deadline for name applications is May 15. (WJCL News Savannah)
- Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless reported that about 700 people are experiencing homelessness in the community. A Point in Time count indicated that there are 441 people in shelters and 271 unsheltered people. Results showed a mix of temporary and chronically homeless individuals. Officials plan to use this information to help tailor programs combating homelessness. Despite knowing there is not a one-size-fits-all solution, local leaders are confident in their abilities to provide needed services. One of the biggest issues cited is mental health. (WTOC)
