Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. The Longwoods International Study revealed in their latest report that tourism in Savannah added about 2,300 jobs and employed about 2,700 people. $4.4 billion flowed into Savannah through its tourism businesses during 2022. The contributions from the various parts of the industry — hotels, restaurants, attractions, sports, and entertainment — are described in the 2022 Travel USA Report. (Savannah Business Journal)
  2. Police in Savannah and Chatham investigated two murders this weekend. The first, an incident in the Newell Village neighborhood, left a man dead, for which LaShonda Williams was arrested and charged. At the second scene, the police encountered a wounded man, who later died from his injuries in the hospital. No one has been arrested in the case. The names of the victims have not been released. (Savannah Morning News)
  3. The square at the corner of Abercorn and East Wayne, formerly honored with the name John C. Calhoun after a politician associated with slavery, has now had 15 approved suggestions for a new name. The decision to remove Calhoun's name was made by Savannah's city council last year, following public input and considering the discrepancy between Calhoun's legacy and the city's values. The applications, which had to fulfill specific criteria and receive support from various officials, are now open for public review and feedback here, with a public meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m. tonight at the Coastal Georgia Center to discuss the naming process.
