500 Faithful March for Immigration Reform on Holy Thursday

About 500 people representing multiple denominations made an eight-mile march from in Smyrna to Marietta Square Thursday to raise awareness about immigration reform in the United States.

Over the past 15 years St. Thomas’s congregation went from being 90 percent white to about 90 percent Hispanic, said PJ Edwards, a parishioner and one of the event’s organizers. He said that St. Thomas parishioners have taken an active interest in immigration long before it was a divisive political issue.

St. Thomas the Apostle is one of the largest parishes in the Atlanta Archdiocese, Edwards said. Where most parishes in the region have 2,000 to 3,000 registered families, St. Thomas has more than 6,000, he said.
