Powers Electrical Solutions: Simple tips to prepare for the colder weather
Now is the perfect time for homeowners to prepare their homes for winter and make sure their electrical systems are operating properly.

The arrival of colder weather is the perfect time for homeowners to prepare their homes for winter and make sure their electrical systems are operating properly.
“Colder temperatures put additional strain on electrical systems as we’re using heaters, lighting, and appliances more frequently,” said Paul Powers, a master electrician and owner of Powers Electrical Solutions, which serves the metro Atlanta region.
“All systems, even those we rely on every season, need an inspection,” Powers added. “The good news is that a few simple checks before the height of the cold weather can prevent costly or dangerous problems later.”

Powers suggests homeowners:
- Inspect outdoor outlets: Exterior outlets should have weatherproof covers to protect against moisture and ice.
- Use outdoor-rated cords: With the holidays come more outdoor decorations, so anyone decorating for the season should keep it jolly by using outdoor-rated cords and avoiding overloaded outlets.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: While many people know to check smoke detectors when the clocks change in the fall and spring, it’s a good practice to test them routinely throughout the year to ensure they’re working properly, especially before running indoor space heaters or using the fireplace.
- Plan for power outages: Storms and an aging power grid are making outages more commonplace. As part of their preparations, homeowners should consider installing a standby generator to keep systems running safely and smoothly.
- Follow the instructions: Before plugging in any new appliances, be sure to check the directions. Using seasonal appliances such as space heaters correctly can prolong their lifespan and help prevent electrical hazards.
- Schedule a home inspection: Systems wear out over time. To catch problems early and prevent them from ballooning into full-blown headaches, homeowners should call a licensed electrician to inspect all electrical systems, including panels, breakers, and wiring, to ensure they are prepared for the increased demand that comes with colder temperatures.
“Safety isn’t seasonal; it should be a priority year-round,” Powers said. “We can’t control the weather, but we can help ensure your home is prepared and operates in tip-top shape no matter the season. While it may be tempting to presume that all systems are in working order, it’s always better to check and have peace of mind.”
