Dynamic Road Signs To Guide Travelers Around Cumberland Area

SMYRNA, GA -- Drivers who travel around the Cumberland area of southern Cobb County will soon see some dynamic road signs along with the usual bells and whistles associated with Atlanta-area traffic.

Six dynamic message signs have been activated by the Cobb County Department of Transportation throughout Marietta and Smyrna. The signs, concentrated around the Interstate 75/U.S. 41 corridor, are designed to guide patrons of SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta.

The full-color LED signs will give travelers information such as travel times, which routes to take, public service announcements and other road-related data. They have been installed on Cobb Parkway, South Marietta Parkway, Roswell Road and Spring Road, the county said.

The signs will use a color-code -- green indicates near free-flow speeds, yellow means moderate speeds and red digits indicate slow conditions.

“The new dynamic signs have exceptional image clarity and are a significant benefit to motorists, offering real-time information to assist in choosing travel paths,” Jim Wilgus, CCDOT director, said in a statement. “This is state-of-the art technology that offers Cobb County an additional way to reduce congestion and improve the travel experience.”

The signs will display real-time data collected by Cobb and metro area transit officials from motorists’ Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-enabled mobile devices.

“We look forward to receiving feedback as motorists get used to the new signs and messages. The messaging system software was designed to be flexible, so we expect to make changes to accommodate our drivers,” Wilgus said.

Cobb officials hope the signs will help visitors more easily navigate around SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta for events and Braves games.
