Gwinnett Man Shot By Officers Identified, Facing Charges
Gwinnett County officers have identified the man they say pointed a handgun at them, leading to a police shooting that injured the man.

SNELLVILLE, GA — The man who was shot by Gwinnett police officers after being accused of pointing a handgun at them Sunday at a Holland Drive home has been identified.
Gwinnett County Police said Edwin Mendez, 32, of Snellville, was charged in connection with the incident that occurred around 11:30 p.m.
Mendez was charged on suspicion of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, reckless conduct and shooting a firearm within 50 yards of a public roadway, police said Monday afternoon.

Officers first responded to the 3600 block of Holland after a 911 caller told dispatch they heard about four to five shots and someone screaming at the house.
Responding officers heard arguing coming from the home when they arrived, police said. As they were about to enter the house, police said Mendez walked out the front door.

An officer who allegedly saw Mendez with a handgun announced himself, and Mendez immediately pointed the gun at the officer, police said. The officer then fired one shot, injuring Mendez, police said.
Officers took custody of the gun and started rendering aid, police said. Mendez was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.
It was not revealed if anyone was harmed in the initial shooting.
