Snellville to Celebrate 90th Birthday

The city is having two celebrations this month to honor the big day.

The city of Snellville is celebrating its 90th birthday during the month of August with two events.Β 

The first event will take place during the Snellville City Council meeting Monday, Aug. 12,Β at 7:30 p.m. in city hall.

Mayor Kelly Kautz will present a proclamation to the Snellville Historical Society, and all past mayors and former council members have been invited to attend. Miss Brookwood 2013 Ariana Stringfellow will lead the crowd in a rendition of Happy Birthday, and a special birthday cake will be carried into council chambers by former Councilman Wayne Odum, the longest serving council member in the history of Snellville. The Snellville Police Color Guard will present the flag, and retired Snellville Police Officer McClure will lead the mayor and council in the pledge of the flag.

After the ceremonial matters, the council meeting will take placeΒ and then everyone isΒ invitedΒ invited to the community room for birthday cake and a special slideshow presentation over the history of Snellville.

β€œSnellville has changed a great deal in 90 years, but our citizens still have the hearts of a small town neighbor," Kautz said in a news release. "As we celebrate our 90th anniversary, we are looking ahead at how we can continue to better our community and improve the service we provide to our citizens. In order to look ahead, however, we must learn from and respect our history.”

The second event will take placeΒ Saturday, Aug. 24 during the Live on the Lawn concertΒ on the city's town green in front of city hall. TheΒ mayor, city council and the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association will partner to have a larger birthday celebration with the 17-piece group theΒ Metro Jazz Club performing.Β 

The City of Snellville City Charter was officially issued on August 20, 1923. Β Β
