Tucker Man Dies In Snellville Police Shooting: GBI

The man was accused of firing a weapon during a traffic stop at West Main Street.

SNELLVILLE, GA — A Tucker man was shot and killed Saturday morning during a traffic stop at West Main Street near Fountain Drive, both Snellville Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

The GBI said officers conducted the stop around 4 a.m., when they said a person was driving a Hyundai Tucson without head lights.

The man had a phone in his hand, with the window slightly rolled down, and repeatedly told officers he wanted to call his mom, the GBI said. Once the officer retrieved the man's ID, he returned to his patrol car to call for backup, the GBI said.

The man was accused of refusing to roll down the window and comply with commands to exit the Tucson once the officer returned to the car, the GBI said. The officer then told the man he would be arrested on suspicion of obstruction if he did not exit the car, the GBI said.

When the officer opened the front door of the car, the GBI said he saw a weapon in the man's hands and gave the man commands to put it down.

Police said the man had the gun pointed at his head.

"The driver ultimately fired his weapon, and officers on scene returned fire," police said in a news release.

The man was killed in the gunfire, both the GBI and police said. The GBI identified the man as Rashawn Johnson, 36.

The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy, the GBI said.

Once complete, the GBI case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
