What Labor Day Means for Snellville

A look at end-of-summer events and the meaning of this upcoming three-day weekend.

The U.S. Department of Labor describes Labor Day as a tribute to American workers who have contributed to the "strength, prosperity and well-being of our country."

So, it's more than just hotdogs and hamburgers, although that's a fantastic way to celebrate our achievements! And although it's not officially the end of summer, most summer activities are drawing to a close.Β 

Gwinnett County outdoor water parks will close after Labor Day, including (the outside portion) and . As of today, Aug. 27, the weekend weather outlook looks dreary, so if you plan to go swimming before the parks close for the season you may want to go today.Β

Looking for some fun ways to spend the weekend? Other than shopping and grilling out, go Geek and head out to Dragon Con! (That's not an insult - geeks are much cooler than they used to be.) According to their website, Dragon Con is the "largest multi-mediaΒ popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe."

If the weather changes its mind, there are outdoor activities galore in this region. Just an hour or so away is Helen, Ga., a quaint little German-ish village, along with multiple hiking and camping spots. Cloudland Canyon, Tallulah Gorge, Unicoi State Park and, of course, Stone Mountain are all close by and a lot of fun.Β

The Decatur Book Festival will be going on in Decatur this entire weekend, so stop by there for some great activities, including cooking demonstrations, activities for kids and special performances.Β 

Government offices will be closed on Labor Day, but trash pickup should not be affected.Β
