5 Injured In 3-Vehicle Crash Involving Powder Springs Officer

The police lieutenant was on-duty at the time of the Richard D. Sailors Parkway crash, during which five people suffered minor injuries.

POWDER SPRINGS — An on-duty Powder Springs lieutenant was involved in a three-vehicle pileup that resulted in injuries this week, the Cobb County Police Department said Wednesday.

Police said the lieutenant, with patrol lights and sirens activated, was driving a marked 2022 Ford Explorer west on Richard D. Sailors Parkway around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Simultaneously, a 2007 Toyota 4Runner carrying two people from Hiram was heading south on New Macland Road toward the intersection. Police said the Ford went into the path of the Toyota, causing the Toyota to hit the right side of the Ford.

The Toyota then rotated clockwise, uncontrollably resting in the westbound of Richard D. Sailors, police said.

The Ford redirected and crashed into a 2019 Honda Odyssey that was carrying three people, causing the Honda to rotate clockwise and uncontrollably rest in the eastbound lanes of Richard D. Sailors, police said. The Ford stopped in the eastbound lanes, as well.

Police said while the lieutenant and an occupant of the Toyota refused to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, a 53-year-old Hiram woman in the Toyota was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital for minor injuries.

The occupants of the Honda were all taken to Wellstar Paulding Hospital for minor injuries, police said. They were a 42-year-old Dallas woman, a 59-year-old Powder Springs woman, a 63-year-old Douglasville woman and a 29-year-old Dallas woman, police said.

Cobb County Police's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit is investigating the crash.
