UPDATE: Cobb to Hold Thursday Groundbreaking Event for Floyd Road Project

Floyd Road is being redesigned as a four-lane road with a 20-foot-wide raised median dividing the north and southbound lanes. The 20-foot-wide raised median will be similar to many of the same medians with the same widths throughout Cobb County, like the median along East West Connector, which is filled with trees, grass and bushes.

James Hudgins, the pre-construction program manager for Cobb Department of Transportation, stated in an email, "The 20’ raised median will be equivalent to the raised median on the East-West Connector.   The 20’ raised median is a GDOT Standard, funded by GDOT, and follow GDOT standards."

Baldwin Paving will begin construction of the $5.5 million project on July 27. The project is estimated to be completed by Jan. 17, 2014. However, utility and weather delays could postpone the completion date.

On Thursday, South Cobb citizens are invited to the groundbreaking for the Floyd Road improvement project, which includes road widening and the construction of a 20-foot raised median.

The project area is confined by Clay Road to the south and Hicks Road to the north.

The project is funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and through a separate GDOT-funded program, the county will construct a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail on the west side of Floyd Road and a sidewalk on the east side. Eventually, the multi-use trail will connect to the Silver Comet Trail.

The design for the second project has just begun, Cobb DOT Pre-construction Program Manager James Hudgins told South Cobb Patch in an email.
