Justin Ross Harris Begins Life Sentence In Valdosta Prison

Harris was sentenced on Dec. 5 after being convicted in the murder of his 22-month-old son Cooper.

SOUTH COBB, GA -- Justin Ross-Harris has a new address and new haircut for 2017.

The defendant in what is arguably this century's most infamous murder trial in Cobb County has begun a life sentence behind bars at the Valdosta State Prison, information on the Department of Corrections website for the state of Georgia shows.

Harris was sentenced on Dec. 5 after being convicted a month earlier for murder and other felonies in the death of his 22-month-old son Cooper Harris. The boy was left in a hot car for seven hours while Harris went to work.

The incident, often shortened by the media to "hot car death," made national news and put a spotlight on Cobb County.

Harris said that he usually would drop his son off at day care before heading into work at Home Depot's corporate headquarters. But on this day -- June 18, 2014, Harris left his Marietta home with his son strapped into a car seat behind him and stopped by a Chick-Fil-A to eat breakfast.

After the two left the restaurant and he strapped the boy back in, Harris then went to work, leaving Cooper in the car all day, according to court records and testimony.

It wasn't until he had gotten off from work that he noticed his son still in the back seat. Harris pulled into a strip mall on Akers Mill Square on Cobb Parkway and tried to resuscitate the boy via CPR, according to reports. Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors in the case unleashed damning information about Harris, including text messages between him and a minor. His web searches also revealed that he longed for a "child-free lifestyle," according to testimony.

The Valdosta State Prison has 10 general population units with 500 beds, six mental health units with 264 beds, with 25 isolation beds, according to its website.

Inmates will be assigned work details such as trash, aides, grounds maintenance, horticulture, laundry and food service, the site says.
