Weekend Planner: Groove to Mo' Motown, Visit Local Art Centers for Free

There are plenty of great events happening this weekend in and around South Cobb. Many of them are family-friendly and FREE.

Friday

What: The Strand saved what audiences loved about last year's Motown show and added in classics and new cuts of music from Motown greats like Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson. Anticipate seeing some familiar faces as well some exciting new talent in this fast paced musical revue.

When: 7 p.m. Also playing on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

"Scary-etta Tours"
What: Step aboard a trolley for a "spirited" 90-minute fully-narrated ride through Marietta. Learn the history of Marietta though the eyes of the dearly departed, and hear stories of the ghosts residing in the Kennesaw House and the story of the haunted Mary Meinert statue at the St. James Episcopal Cemetery. You can also walk around the Old City Cemetery and hear accounts of Marietta’s most famous ghost the "Lady in Black." The ride concludes with stories of local haunted houses and the apparition of a Union soldier who refuses to go quietly into the night.

When: The trolley tour is Friday at 8 p.m., and walking tours will be offered Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $27 for adults, and $14 for children 12 and under. You can buy tickets online or call 770-425-1006 for reservations.

Summer Discovery Walk at Sope Creek

What: Join a National Park Service naturalist for a walk through a beautiful hardwood forest supporting a thriving diversity of native ferns, flowering shrubs, and wildflowers.  We will hike through xeric oak-hickory forest and mesic ravine forest. Reservations are required; please call 678-538-1200 to make your reservation, space is limited!

Where: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area -Entrace at 3760 Paper Mill Road SE, Marietta, GA 30067

When: 4-6:30 p.m.

Cost: $3 Daily Park Pass or $25 Annual Park Pass  (Parking fee)

Sibley Pond Sunset Family Friendly Event

What: Start the evening by roasting marshmallows over the campfire and as the sun sets, begin your walk searching the shores of the pond for frogs and other nocturnal creatures waiting to be discovered. Enjoy the sunset, the fireflies, and the cricket chorus as you experience your national park at night. Reservations are REQUIRED - Call 678-538-1200 to make your reservation, space is limited!

Where: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area - Entrance at 3760 Paper Mill Road, Marietta, GA 30067

When: 8:30 - 10:30 p.m.

Cost: $3 Daily Park Pass or $25 Annual Park Pass (parking fee)

Saturday

Kids Workshop: Build a Moving Truck 

Note that you can show up anytime, but allow at least an hour for your project.  In addition to the newly constructed project, each child, ages 5-12, receives a kid-sized orange apron, a certificate, and an achievement pin

Where: All Home Depot Locations, including at 1200 East-West Connector in Austell

When: 9 a.m.- noon

Cost: Free

"B at the Movies" Free Family Outdoor Movie Series

What: Take your lawn chairs and blankets to and relax under the stars while watching the movie, "Rio," on a large inflatable screen. The movie being shown is to be determined. Come early for pre-show festivities and giveaways! The event is presented by B98.5 and Aldi.

When: movie begins at dusk

Cost: Free

Museums on Us

What: is offering free admission to participating museums, zoos and other cultural sites through its "Museums on Us" program in the first weekend of each month, until otherwise noted. Atlanta-area institutions accepting the bank's cards in lieu of admission fees include The High Museum and The Atlanta History Center. According to the bank's website, more than 140 sites across the country are offering free admissions on certain days to their debit and credit cardholders.
