- It can be one of the worst things in life, having a family pet run off. Searching, posting flyers and calling around to all the shelters and vets in the area can be so stressful. There's one thing you can do, though, to help bring your pet back home faster - microchipping. If an animal runs off and shows up at a rescue, shelter, vet or with the county, rest assured, they will scan for a chip. There's help out there for you and your pets in the Cherokee County Animal Shelter and their microchipping service. For free, county residents can bring their pets over to 1015 Univeter Road or 131 Chattin Drive for a free chip Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. An appointment isn't required, you can just walk right in, but please be sure to have your pet secured on a leash or in a carrier.
