Here are the top five stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:
- The Cherokee Family Violence Center is holding a Sunday Funday TopGolf Tournament on June 4, raising funds to help the center provide housing, shelter, education, financial planning and support services for women and families impacted by domestic violence. There will be a silent auction, raffle prizes, guests of honor, drinks, dinner, music and dancing and, of course, golf. Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome, you can grab your tickets at the link. If you'd prefer to make a donation online, you can do so here. The event will be held at TopGolf, 10900 Westside Parkway in Alpharetta. (Cherokee Family Violence Center)
- Be sure to check out the "Through the Looking Glass: Art + Science" exhibit at the Reeves House Visual Arts Center before it's gone. The exhibit explores art and science as they intertwine through the lens of microscopes and telescopes. The beautiful art in the exhibit includes 3D printed sculptures of viruses, images from the Hubble Telescope and more. If you'd like to bring your children to the exhibit, the gallery has parent and guides for both younger and older children that include facts, discussion ideas, an at-home DIY project, a suggested reading list and more. The exhibit runs until April 30 at the Reeves House Visual Arts Center, at 734 Reeves Street. (Woodstock Arts)
- There's some movement going on in the Cherokee County School District, with quite a few retirements, promotions and assignments announced this week. The executive director of administrative leadership for elementary schools, Kerry Martin, is retiring after a 33-year career in education. Moving into the role is Cherokee High School principal Rodney Larrotta, who previously served as principal at Hasty Elementary and a teacher and coach at Woodstock High. To fill Larrotta's vacant position, Andy Hall will be the principal at Cherokee High School in the upcoming school year. Hall most recently served as principal of the ACTIVE Academies campus in Canton, which houses ACE Academy, Cherokee College & Career Academy, i-Grad Virtual Academy and Transition Academy. - School Board Member Robert Rechsteiner and the derogatory comments he allegedly made during a wrestling convention in Los Angeles have come back to the forefront. It's almost been a month with no word from the Cherokee County School District, Rechsteiner or the board, but at Thursday's meeting, parents wanted to know the board's plan and response to the matter. Rechsteiner is accused calling Gisele Shaw, a trans pro wrestler, a "man," "piece of trash," "filth" and making other hateful comments. Parents at the board meeting had several sound ideas about what should happen, one suggesting a hearing to determine if Rechsteiner should be found in violation of the board's code of ethics.
