Here are the top five stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:
- Unwind Wednesdays are coming back to Cherokee Veterans Park in Canton. The evening, family-friendly events are focused each time, with the first one on April 26 called "Yoga in the Park." Michel Delifer from Ember Hot Yoga in Downtown Woodstock will lead the first and second events in the series. The third event on June 28 is listed as "Pup Stars Dog Show." I can't wait to see the details on that one! You can bring your lawn chairs and blankets with you. Each event will include food trucks, vendors, music and much more. Unwind Wednesdays are held from 5:30 - 8 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month, April through October. (Cherokee Recreation & Parks)
- If your child is at risk of not being promoted to the next grade until they retake a class or two, the Cherokee County School District is offering summer school from June 5 - 23. Rising ninth-graders and high school students have many options in courses, including personal fitness and health classes, but please note, the registration window opens on April 24 and closes on May 26. Credit recovery courses will be offered at all high schools in the district and attendance is mandatory once registered. If you'd like more information, you can read through the official CCSD website here or reach out to your child's school counselor. (CCSD via Facebook)
- The burn ban is about to hit our area, do you have yard debris to get rid of? If you do have clearing to do, now's a good time. The ban was created to help reduce the pollutants we release into the air around the metro area during the summer while the air quality is often quite poor. Generally speaking, we aren't allowed to burn sticks, branches or leaves during the ban from May 1 - September 30. Until then, be sure to check the conditions on the day you will be burning, there have been a few days recently where the conditions were not suitable for burning due to low relative humidity and strong winds. You can look up the conditions online here or by calling the Georgia Forestry Commission at 877-652-2876. You do not need a permit for yard debris or recreational fires, but permits are required for bonfires and land clearing fires. - The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has a scam warning to share with us. Please know that the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol does not ask for money over the phone. If you get a call saying that a package of yours has been intercepted, it's not true. In the scam scenario, the caller will tell you that sending them money will somehow resolve the issue. Don't send the money. If you've been a victim of fraud, a scam or bad business practices, you can make a report to the Federal Trade Commission, the government agency that works to protect consumers, on its official website here. - A residential home was heavily damaged in a fire on Monday afternoon. The home near Pearidge Road and Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton was filled with flames and smoke when firefighters arrived. They conducted a search and found nobody inside and reported no injuries. The north end of Pearidge Road was opened up to through-traffic before evening. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
