Woodstock Lions Club Releases Its Lions End-of-Year Impact Report
This Impact Report provides an overview of the work that was accomplished by our Club with the assistance of our sponsors and partners.
Woodstock, GA -- The Woodstock Lions Club released its Lions End-Of-Year
Impact Report. The Lions’ year runs July ’23 – June ’24.
Frank Hunton, Past President of the Woodstock Lions Club for the Lions’ year
July ’23 – June ’24, said, “this Impact Report provides an overview of the work
that was accomplished by our Club with the assistance of our sponsors and
partners. This past year was very busy for our members who worked many
volunteer hours. We know that our work has made a real difference in our
community. Thank you to our sponsors and partners for your support.”
The newly formed Diabetes Committee, headed by Dr. Sabrinah Dorce, provides
primary prevention screening for those at higher risk for type 2 diabetes.
According to Dr. Dorce, “in Georgia alone, more than 1.1 million have type 2
diabetes. Further, of the 2.6 million Georgians who have prediabetes, 84% are
unaware of their status. The committee’s objective is to identify those who have
prediabetes and refer them to one of the sixty-one (61) CDC National Diabetes
Prevention Programs located throughout the state. Our start up activities
included compliance, safety, and instrument training of committee members. In
addition, by partnering with a local nonprofit organization, we secured a
screening instrument on loan and at no cost from the manufacturer. To date the
committee has participated in several events and screened a total of sixty-two
(62) individuals, resulting in identifying and referring twelve (12) individuals who
have prediabetes.”
The Service Committee, headed by Gopinath Govindaraj, focused on the Global
Causes of Childhood Cancer, Disaster Relief, Environment, Humanitarian,
Hunger, and Youth. Gopi stated, “I want to thank our wonderful partnerships like
CURE’ Foundation for Childhood Cancer, City of Woodstock Adopt-A-Road, St.
Michaels Church Food Pantry, the River Ridge High School ROTC cadets, and
the YMCA to make working on these Global Causes possible.”
The Vision Committee, headed by Stan Stanly, focused on Vision Screening.
Stan stated, “The Woodstock Lions Club vision screening initiative provides
vision care assistance to local community residents through special vision
screening outreach activities and health fairs. In addition, the Woodstock Lions
Club is working collaboratively with the Canton and Ball Ground Lions to conduct
vision screenings in the Cherokee County School District for pre-school and high
school students throughout the County. Since July 2023, the Lions completed
1624 vision screenings for Cherokee County students, and we are planning to
provide further vision screening assistance to students during the 2024-2025
school year. The Lions also collect used eyeglasses that are cleaned and
distributed by the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation to mission teams to be
distributed in third world countries.”
Current Woodstock Lions Club President Megan Dean said, “I also want to thank
our Sponsors and Partners for your support, and, I hope you will continue to
stand with us as we work to make our community a better place for all. Our Club
members work tirelessly to make a difference in Woodstock and throughout
Cherokee County. We hope the release of this Impact Report will connect with
people in our community and therefore inspire them to join our work on the eight
Global Causes we support.”
