📰 News we're reading

1. Fuels project aims to make Idaho park resilient to wildfires (missoulacurrent.com) — A new fuels-reduction project at Virgil Phillips Farm Park, just north of Moscow, is designed to better protect nearby homes and recreation areas from wildfires. Crews thinned small trees and brush to slow potential fires while preserving wildlife habitat. County and conservation leaders hope the work will guide future projects as more people move into the Moscow Mountain area.

2. Four men arrested for alleged burglary of multiple University of Idaho fraternities (ktvb.com) — Four young men, including three University of Idaho students and one Moscow resident, were arrested after an early-morning burglary was reported at a campus fraternity house. Moscow Police say multiple fraternities were allegedly targeted, and witnesses inside one house confronted the suspects before they fled. Court records link several Greek houses, raising safety concerns for students and neighbors near campus.

3. Fish and Game relocates four moose from University of Idaho (idahostatejournal.com) — Wildlife officials recently tranquilized and moved four moose from the University of Idaho arboretum to a safer habitat outside Moscow, after the animals grew too comfortable living around people. The relocation aimed to prevent conflicts with students, staff, and neighbors while protecting the moose. Residents are urged to enjoy wildlife from a distance and avoid feeding animals in town.

4. Idaho Supreme Court schedules arguments on private ed tax credit (dnews.com) — The Moscow School District is part of a coalition asking the Idaho Supreme Court to strike down the new “Parental Choice Tax Credit” for private education, with oral arguments set for Jan. 23. The case could reshape how Idaho funds education, as opponents say the program violates the state constitution’s requirement for a uniform public school system.

5. Pullman aquatic center sold to SEL (lmtribune.com) — A major change at Pullman’s aquatic center will still keep regional pool access open for Moscow-area families. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories is buying and renaming the facility, while the Pullman School District will pay SEL annually so students, staff and volunteers can keep using the Pioneer Hill pool for swim teams and other activities through 2030.
