📰 News we're reading

1. The next infrastructure wave isn't roads, it's treatment plants (smartwatermagazine.com) — Sandpoint voters have approved a $130 million bond to completely replace the city’s aging wastewater treatment plant, with construction expected to start in late 2026. The project will modernize core treatment processes, add UV disinfection, upgrade controls and electrical systems, and tighten nutrient removal to better protect local waterways for decades.

2. U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands Mourns Passing of Senior Judge Alex R. Munson (mvariety.com) — Sandpoint was home in retirement to Senior Judge Alex R. Munson, who died here on Dec. 5 after a distinguished four-decade judicial career across Micronesia and the Pacific. Local readers may be surprised to learn this nationally respected federal judge chose Sandpoint for his later years, remaining active in the courts until fully retiring in 2025.

3. Norma Jean Syth, 89 (bonnercountydailybee.com) — Longtime Sandpoint resident Norma Jean Syth, who helped raise multiple generations of family and was active in local life, has passed away at 89. A celebration of her life will be held Dec. 13 at the family farm on Rapid Lightning Road in Sandpoint, and friends are invited to share memories online.

4. PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Howard corrals big-time double-double in Wampus Cats' first win of season (bonnercountydailybee.com) — Sandpoint High’s undefeated Lady Bulldogs pushed their record to 5-0 with a 58–48 home win over Timberlake, fueled by Jordyn Tomco’s 22 points and a huge third quarter. The roundup also highlights strong performances by Clark Fork and Kootenai Thunder boys and girls teams in recent regional matchups.

5. Idaho partners with U.S. Forest Service with goal to double timber sales (chronline.com) — State and federal officials are targeting forested areas around Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene for increased logging and fuel reduction as part of a renewed Idaho–U.S. Forest Service stewardship deal. The plan aims to roughly double timber sales to cut wildfire risk, fund habitat and recreation projects, and lean on partnerships despite recent Forest Service staffing turmoil and concerns about reduced public input in environmental reviews.
