60 MPH 'Peak Gusts' Could Damage Trees, Power Lines: Illinois Weather

ILLINOIS — After a day of rain and storms, and winds that hit 53 mph at O'Hare airport, the National Weather Service is warning residents of high winds that could hit 60 mph as the afternoon wears on.

A high wind warning is in effect for Illinois and Northwest Indiana until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Earlier, NWS said gusts of 50 to 55 mph could hit the area. Now, weather officials said very strong west-southwest winds could get up to 60 mph.

NWS is warning residents that outdoor objects may blow away, and the Chicago area could also experience power outages and power lines are damaged.

NWS is also urging motorists to use caution. The high winds will make for difficult travel, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The highest winds could hit by around 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service urged residents to consider postponing any outdoor burning due to the fierce winds.

Wind will ease tonight into Friday morning, but after dry weather much of the day, Thursday night could bring a brief period of rain and even snow.

Friday could bring a chance of rain and storms, with a high of 57 degrees, while Saturday is expected to be sunny but cooler, with a high of 48.

Cloudy skies are expected Easter Sunday, with a high of 49 degrees.
