Chicago Sees Snowiest Start To Winter Since 1978

At Chicago-O'Hare, 17.1 inches of snow has fallen so far this season.

Winter 2025-2026 has already almost exceeded the amount of snow that fell during the entire winter 2024-25 season, the National Weather Service shared.

At O'Hare, 17.1 inches of snow has fallen so far this season. 17.6 inches of snow fell during the entire 2024-25 season, according to the weather service.

"Winter 2025-2026 is off to a roaring start, with over 15 [inches] of snow measured at both Chicago and Rockford in the past 9 days alone," the weather service said on its Facebook.

For Chicago, it is the snowiest start to the season since 1978.

The weather service also noted that there were two warning-level snowfall events during November 2025. The last time two warning-level snow events happened in November was in 2008.

The average seasonal snowfall in Chicago is 37.1 inches, according to the weather service.

And the snow doesn't appear to be stopping anytime soon. This week will feature periodic snow chances through the end of the week. Another shot of Arctic air is also coming to the Chicago area, expected Dec. 12-14, according to the weather service.

Highs may drop toward the single digits and teens, and lows could be toward zero. Below zero wind chills are possible, especially during the overnight hours, the weather service said.

AccuWeather's current forecast is calling for a high of 6 degrees on Saturday, and a high of 9 on Sunday.
