CHICAGO — After the Chicago area got its first true taste of springtime weather with a hint of summer thrown in for good measure, jacket season with a possible need for an umbrella returns again for the week ahead.

The National Weather Service is predicting that temperatures will remain on the cooler side for the foreseeable future after Saturday produced the warmest conditions of the year. Most of the greater Chicago area enjoyed temperatures in the low 80s but will return to a steady diet of the colder-than-normal 40s and 50s for the week ahead.

Forecasters aren’t predicting a chance of rain until Thursday, but the week starts out cloudy in the low 50s, which represents a significant drop from even Sunday when air temperatures remained mild despite a rainy portion of the afternoon hours.

The sun is expected to return Tuesday and Wednesday, but temperatures will struggle to reach into the low 50s and could remain in the 40s, forecasters predict. Temperatures will hover around freezing or in the mid-30s for lows this week and the closest thing to more mild temperatures won’t return until Friday, when highs will approach 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters are warning of a frost-freeze possibility on Tuesday night when they say temperatures could dip into the lower 20s and into the low 30s before the sun returns to the sky on Wednesday.

There is just a slight chance of rain on Thursday, but more rain could move into the area again next weekend when forecasters are predicting temperatures will remain mild and could reach into the low 60s.
