5 Tornadoes Confirmed So Far In Chicago Area

The weather service said there are 29 different paths of potential damage that its teams are investigating.

ILLINOIS — After severe weather ripped through the Chicago area on Monday, the National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes, and it is still out surveying damage on Tuesday to identify potential tornado tracks.

The severe storms grounded planes and stopped trains on Monday night, and thousands are still without power on Tuesday.

The weather service said there are 29 different paths of potential damage that its teams are investigating. It expects to have more information later on Tuesday, but the surveys could take multiple days.

So far, the weather service said its preliminary findings are:

  • At least an EF-1 tornado near Channahon
  • EF-1 tornado on the near west side of Chicago to the far western portions of the Loop
  • EF-1 tornado in the Bristol and Oswego areas
  • At least EF-0 tornado damage in Justice and Bridgeview
  • At least an EF-0 tornado near Crown Point, Indiana

The severe weather has been classified as a derecho by weather professionals. A derecho is a long-lived windstorm, as well as fast-moving showers and storms, according to the weather service.

150,444 people are still affected by power outages as of 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. ComEd released a statement saying that it expects 80 percent of outages to be restored by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, with the remaining 20 percent to be restored by 6 p.m. on Friday.

ComEd customers can check the outage map to see their own expected restoration times.

In the Chicago area, Cook County has 80,381 without power; DuPage has 3,815, Grundy has 5,585, and Will has 34,412
