Faster Food: Portillo's Will Soon Go Cashless For Drive-Thru Payments

The Oak Brook-based fast food chain said the change goes into effect later this month and provides customers faster and smoother service.

ILLINOIS — Portillo’s customers across Illinois who have experienced long waits in the popular fast food chain’s drive-thru lines may soon be getting their food faster than in the past.

On Tuesday, Portillo’s announced that their drive-thru lines will move to a cashless payment system, which officials from the retailer hope will cut down on wait times for hungry customers. A Portillo’s spokesperson told Patch on Wednesday that the changes will go into effect on Jan. 16.

In a statement issued by Portillo’s on Tuesday, the chain said that the cashless payment system “creates a faster, smoother service for our guests and is safer for our team members.”

Cash will only be accepted inside the stores once the changes go into effect later this month, the spokesperson said.

Portillo’s, which was founded in Oak Brook, has 45 Illinois locations and has expanded now to Indiana, Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and will soon open a Texas location.

Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are all accepted as methods of payment for drive-thru customers.
