Freezing Rain, Wintry Mix Could Bring Icy Conditions To Chicago

Two rounds of winter weather advisories have been issued for Monday and into Tuesday.

ILLINOIS — Two rounds of winter weather advisories have been issued Monday, as a wintry mix could bring ice accumulation to the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

The first winter weather advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to noon Monday for the Chicago area. The weather service said a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is possible. This could cause slippery travel, and a glaze of ice.

Both the Monday and Tuesday morning commutes could be impacted by the wintry weather, according to the weather service.

The highest ice accumulations are expected mainly south of Interstate 88, the weather service said.

"Temperatures will be key on whether ice will accumulate," the weather service said on Facebook. "Right now, our forecast has them right at or just below freezing. If they end up just one degree above freezing, far less ice will accumulate."

The high for Monday is 31 degrees, and the high for Tuesday is 35. The rest of the week will have highs in the 40s, according to the weather service.

There will be a break in precipitation on Monday afternoon, before a second winter weather advisory begins for the Chicago area from 9 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The second advisory could bring total ice accumulations of up to a quarter of an inch, and snow and sleet accumulations of up to a half-inch, according to the weather service. Tree damage and power outages could occur Monday night into Tuesday.
