Gusty Snow Showers, Sub-Zero Wind Chills Expected For Chicago Area

Gusts of 45 mph are possible with wind chills of 15 below zero possible early Thursday.

ILLINOIS — Gusty snow showers with winds up to 45 mph could cause some slippery travel conditions on Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service has issued a wind advisory for McHenry, Lake, Ogle, DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Cook and Will counties starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday until midnight.

Most parts of the Chicago area could get snow accumulations of less than an inch for the evening commute.

The wind advisory notes that gusts will blow around unsecured objects, and tree limbs could be blown down with a few power outages.

Reduced visibility is also likely with the gusty snow showers, especially from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The greatest snow coverage will be north of a Sterling to Renesselaer, Indiana line.

In addition to the winds, a strong cold front will bring sharply-falling temperatures late Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service. Wind chills of 5 to 15 below zero are expected.

Thursday will have a high of 29 degrees, and temperatures will start to rise again into the weekend with a high of 31 on Friday, 42 on Saturday and 50 on Sunday.
