Hundreds Of Stolen Vehicles Recovered So Far This Year By IL State Police

State police undertook 39 air operations targeting stolen vehicle recovery and related violent crime, the agency said.

ILLINOIS — Hundreds of stolen vehicles have been recovered by Illinois State Police so far in 2025, the agency announced Monday.

From Janary through March, 243 such vehicles were recovered, according to state police, who said the agency in the same time period made 18 arrests in connection with vehicle highjacking and 16 arrests in connection with vehicle theft. State police also undertook 39 air operations targeting stolen vehicle recovery and related violent crime, the agency said.

According to state police, the agency’s efforts included:

  • The recovery of two guns and arrest of two people who ran from a stolen Chrysler after authorities saw the vehicle Jan. 24 and tried to stop it on northbound Interstate 94 at 79th Street in Chicago;
  • The arrest of six people who ran from a stolen Kia that authorities tried to stop Feb. 26 on southbound Interstate 94 at 76th Street in Chicago;
  • The arrest of a driver who March 9 evaded an attempted traffic stop of a stolen Nissan on southbound I-94 at 35th Street in Chicago, fleeing to Interstate 55 and through DuPage, Will and Grundy counties before stopping in Dwight.

The agency’s efforts are backed by a $677,000 grant from the Illinois Secretary of State Illinois Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council, according to state police.
