Freezing Rain, Snow, Icy Conditions To Hit Chicago Area Wednesday

ILLINOIS — A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is still expected Wednesday into Thursday, although locations impacted remain uncertain, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter weather advisory will take effect at noon Wednesday for most of the Chicago area through 6 a.m. Thursday.

"Total snow and sleet accumulations up to one inch and ice accumulations up to one tenth to locally two tenths of an inch are expected," according to the advisory, making for slick and hazardous travel on roads, especially bridges and overpasses.

"At least some travel impacts are likely areawide, which could include the Wednesday p.m. commute depending on the exact timing of precipitation onset," the weather service said on its Facebook page.

The wintry mix will spread across the area from Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. The weather service said locations near and south of Interstate 80 could change to plain rain during the evening.

Any lingering precipitation after midnight would transition to drizzle or freezing drizzle and end in the early hours on Thursday, according to the weather service.

The high on Wednesday is 34 degrees. Temperatures will warm on Thursday to 45 degrees, and 34 on Friday.

There is another chance for winter weather on Saturday, the weather service said. Rain and snow are likely on Saturday, mainly after noon, according to the current forecast.
