Regular gas prices across the state of Illinois came in at a record high of $5.13 per gallon on Tuesday, 46 cents higher than the $4.67 national average, according to AAA. The statewide average for gas is now 86 cents higher per gallon than this time last year, according to AAA.
"A spike in demand for the busy Memorial Day weekend helped push gas prices to a new record high," AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland said. "A post-holiday decline in demand could have motorists seeing some stability at the pump, but if crude oil prices continue to trade above $105 per barrel, then gas prices will likely remain elevated."
