Illinois' 50 Safest Towns: 2018 Rankings

A study by the National Council for Home Safety and Security took a look at violent crime and property crime rates.

A new ranking of crime rates from the National Council for Home Safety and Security shows that some of the safest cities in Illinois are right here in the Chicago metropolitan area. Illinois has fewer per capita property crimes than most states but more violent crimes, according to the rankings. Its violent crime rate made it the 35th-safest state in the U.S., when adjusted for population, but it has the 18th lowest rate of property crimes.

Chicago was ranked 195th out of 206 Illinois cities listed, with a rate of more than 11 violent crimes and nearly 32 property crimes per 1,000 people.

According to the rankings, Western Springs was rated No. 1 for safety, with zero violent crimes reported in 2017. Rounding out the top five are Channahon (0.08 violent crimes per 1,000 people), Campton Hills (.35), Waterloo (.29), and Homer Glen (.25).

The five least-safe towns on the list were Springfield, Rockford, East St. Louis, Mount Vernon, Lansing and Danville.
