Illinois Property Taxes Still Among Highest In U.S.: Report
People in Illinois pay some of the highest property taxes in the country — and they even went up last year.

ILLINOIS — Illinois residents pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, according to a new analysis from ATTOM Data. The 2017 property tax analysis found that Illinois had the second-highest property tax rate— 2.22 percent — in the country.
The analysis also found that the average tax amount in Illinois increased by 2 percent in 2017 when compared to 2016. The average annual property tax in Illinois for 2017 was $4,941 in 2017 and in 2016 that figure was $4,845.
Lake County had the state's highest average property tax amount at $8,828 and a 2.66% effective tax rate, followed by DuPage ($7,686, with a 2.10% rate) and Kane ($6,432 with a rate of 2.60%). Effingham County had the state's lowest average property tax amount at just $861 and a 0.66% tax rate, while Cook County (2.80 rate) averaged $6,264 and Will (2.30% rate) averaged $5,660.

Nationwide, ATTOM found that property taxes levied on single family homes went up 6 percent. Average property taxes for a single family home in 2017 went up 3 percent to $3,399 from the average property tax of $3,296 in 2016.
