Popular Deli Item Recalled By Jewel-Osco Over Listeria Fears
The action follows a recall initiated by Reser's Fine Food of its breadcrumbs, which are an ingredient in the tuna salad.

ILLINOIS — Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois are voluntarily recalling select items containing tuna salad supplied by Reser's Fine Foods due to possible listeria contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the action follows a recall by Reser's of its breadcrumbs, which are used as an ingredient in the tuna salad.
Jewel-Osco stores in Indiana and Iowa have also recalled the tuna salad. As of Friday, there have been no reports of injuries or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. The FDA recommends anyone concerned about an injury or illness to contact a healthcare provider.
According to the FDA, listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Officials are urging consumers who purchased the tuna salad not to consume it, and to dispose of them or return the items to a local store for a full refund. Consumers should also use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. The FDA said listeria can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
