Mattoon School Shooting Wounds 1; Suspect In Custody

The southeastern Illinois high school was locked down and evacuated Wednesday.

MATTOON, IL — At least one person was wounded and a suspect was taken into custody in a shooting Wednesday morning at a high school in the southeastern Illinois city, according to the Mattoon Journal Gazette and Times-Courier. Mattoon High School was evacuated, and students were bused to a nearby elementary school, the report stated. The victim's condition has not been released.

The shooting happened at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the high school. The police scanner about the shooting described the shooter as a white male, wearing a white T-shirt and carrying a shotgun, according to The News-Gazette in Champaign.

Mattoon High School was locked down when the shooting occurred, and it then was evacuated, the report stated. Other schools in the district are on soft lockdown, the report added.

Authorities are asking residents and parents to stay away for the area while officers secure and investigate the scene, The News-Gazette reports.

Mattoon High School is on lockdown and students are being evacuated to Riddle Elementary School, where they can be picked up by parents, the newspaper reported.
