More Snow Coming: 6-9 More Inches Possible In Parts Of IL, 40 MPH Wind

A winter storm warning is in place for McHenry, Kane, Lake and DeKalb, and additional snowfall will vary wildly depending on where you are.

ILLINOIS — Some in the Chicago area can still expect to see 6 to 9 inches more of snow as snowfall continues throughout the day on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The highest snow rates are expected northwest of Interstate 55 and I-94, and wind gusts up to 45 mph are possible Tuesday evening, making travel dangerous.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for McHenry, Kane, DeKalb, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee and La Salle counties through midnight, with the possibility of another 6 to 9 inches of snow for the DeKalb and Elgin areas, according to the National Weather Service. Winds of up to 40 mph are possible there, as well as Lake County.

Meanwhile, Lake County is also under a winter storm warning, with additional snowfall estimates of 5 to 8 inches in places, but much lower snow accumulation near the lake.

Patchy, blowing snow could make travel difficult, with snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour at times. The wet, slushy snow could continue through 5 p.m. in some areas.

There will be a drop-off in snow amounts somewhere near the I-55/I-94 corridor, as snow transitions to rain, according to the weather service.

In Grundy, Kendall and Livingston counties, another 2 to 4 inches of snow could fall, according to a winter weather advisory.

A winter weather advisory is also in place in DuPage and northern Cook County, with additional snowfall of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Snowfall Totals

Snow started late Monday into Tuesday for some parts of the Chicago area. Here's a look at some local snowfall totals as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Darien, 3.5 inches of snow
  • Frankfort, 2.8 inches of snow
  • Aurora, 2.5 inches of snow
  • Clarendon Hills, 2.4 inches of snow
  • Crest Hill, 1.8 inches of snow

More wintry weather is expected this week. First, a weak snow system could bring light snow and minor accumulations on Wednesday night, especially for areas along and north of I-80.

Then, another winter storm may impact the area Friday into Saturday, the weather service said. Several inches of accumulating snow and strong winds are possible with this storm.
