Flash Flood Warning Issued For Parts Of Chicago Area

ILLINOIS — A flash flood warning was issued before a "pattern change" is coming mid-week for the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

The flash flood warning is in effect for central and south Cook and north-central Will counties until 11:15 p.m. Monday. Flash flood warnings were also in effect in DuPage County until 9:15 p.m. and northeast McHenry County until 10:45 p.m., and Kendall County was under a flood warning until midnight.

According to the NWS, "Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain with rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Up to 3 inches of rain have fallen near Lockport."

A photo shared Monday evening by X user @PrezSkroob showed an entire roadway flooded in Lockport with the water extending into residential yards.

A ground stop ordered Monday evening at Midway International Airport due to the thunderstorms was set to end at 9:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The weather service warned of rapid-onset flooding of creeks, streams, drainage ditches, streets, underpasses, low-lying areas and other poor drainage areas.

Locations that will experience flash flooding in Will and Cook include: Joliet, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Romeoville, Oak Forest, Lockport, New Lenox, Homer Glen, Matteson, Mokena, Frankfort, Crest Hill, Midlothian, Richton Park, Crestwood, Frankfort Square, Ingalls Park, Orland Hills, Preston Heights and Fairmont.

In DuPage: Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Lombard, Woodridge, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lemont, Burr Ridge, Oak Brook, Westmont, Lisle, Darien, Warrenville, Willowbrook and Clarendon Hills.

In Kendall County: Oswego, Plano, Yorkville.

A flood warning was in effect until 2:30 a.m. for parts of Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties.

A flood watch was also in effect for Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties until 4 a.m. Tuesday.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. on Monday for Boone, Bureau, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, La Salle, Lee, McHenry, Ogle and Will counties.

"With hot and humid conditions in place, some storms may be severe with damaging winds and flash flooding," the weather service said on its Facebook. The high on Monday is 90, and peak heat index values will be around 100 degrees.

Hot weather will continue on Tuesday, with a high of 89 degrees. There will again be a chance of storms, mainly southeast of Interstate 57, according to the weather service.

Then, "cooler, less humid, and drier conditions" will arrive by mid-week, the weather service said. Wednesday will have a high of 82, Thursday a high of 83 and Friday of high of 84.

MONDAY: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Heat index values as high as 99. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

MONDAY NIGHT: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

TUESDAY: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. North northeast wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 10 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. North northeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.

THURSDAY: Sunny, with a high near 81.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear, with a low around 63.

FRIDAY: Sunny, with a high near 84.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, with a low around 65.
